Lagos de Covadonga and Picos de Europa

Hola desde España!

Today we woke up very early and took the bus to go up the mountains that surround Llanes: Los Picos de Europa.

Up in the mountains we visited the breathtaking Basilica de Santa Maria la Real de Covadonga as well as a sacred cave. The views were incredible and the students really enjoyed all the nature around them. After visiting Covadonga we went up to the Picos de Europa. Picos de Europa are some of the tallest mountains in Spain, and everyone enjoyed spending time together at one of its lakes. We hiked, played games, and learned about the history of the region. It was chilly compared to Llanes!

After a very fun morning, we went to have the traditional fabada asturiana, which everyone had the opportunity to try. Afterward, we headed to a local cheese factory after passing by Cangas de Onis, the first capital of Spain after the period of “La Reconquista.” At the cheese factory, the students were able to learn firsthand how local goat and cow cheese is produced. It was a wonderful opportunity to speak with a local and play with the goats!

Tomorrow is our last day in Llanes, and although sad, we are all very excited for our next destination: Potes.

Stay tuned for more blogs coming your way (and some student bloggers too!)
